Castel Sant’Elmo is a large fortress on the Vomero hill, high above the centre of Naples, in the south of Italy. It was built in its present form in the 16th century, when Naples was ruled by the Spanish. The fortress has an unusual shape: seen from above, it looks like a six-pointed star. For centuries it was used to defend the city and also as a prison. Because of its high position, it offers one of the best views in Naples.
What to See
The main attraction is the walk along the top of the walls. From here there is a wide view over the whole city, the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and, on clear days, the island of Capri. Inside the fortress you can see thick stone walls, ramps and old rooms, some used for exhibitions. The fortress also has a museum of 20th-century art from Naples. Next to the castle is the Certosa di San Martino, a former monastery with beautiful courtyards, a richly decorated church and a museum about the history of Naples.
How to Get There and Practical Information
The easiest way to get to the fortress is by one of the funiculars from the centre of Naples up to the Vomero hill, followed by a short walk. You can also take the metro to Vanvitelli station. There is a small entrance fee, and the castle is closed one day a week, so check the opening days. Visit on a clear day for the best views. It is easy to combine with the Certosa di San Martino next door.
