The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum) was the central square of Ancient Rome and the site of major political, religious, and social activities. Today, it exists primarily as an archaeological site, as most of the original structures have not survived intact.
The Forum is situated in the historical center of Rome, between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills. To the east, it is adjacent to the Colosseum, and to the west lies Capitoline Hill with the Vittoriano monument.
Originally, the site of the Forum was a swampy lowland. After the area was drained, it became a marketplace. Over time, the Forum acquired political and social significance. Temples, basilicas (used for public assemblies), and residences of aristocratic families were constructed here. The Curia, the Senate’s meeting place, was also located in the Forum. During the height of the Roman Empire, triumphal arches, monuments, and columns were added.
Following the decline of the Roman Empire, the Forum fell into disrepair. Some Christian churches were later built on the site, but they had limited influence on the urban life of Rome. Stones from the Forum were gradually removed for use in other buildings and souvenirs. In response, city authorities eventually fenced the area and established it as an archaeological reserve.
Key Sights
Despite extensive destruction, several structures remain:
- Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine – the largest building in the Forum.
- Triumphal arches – including those of Septimius Severus, Titus, and Tiberius.
- Temple of Saturn – notable for its remaining columns.
- Remnants of Christian churches integrated into the ancient ruins.
Visitors can also view numerous other ruins, including smaller temples, columns, and the foundations of Roman administrative buildings.
