Rome weather through the seasons

Rome has a classic Mediterranean climate: long, hot and dry summers and mild, wetter winters. July and August reach 32–33 °C, with warm nights around 21 °C and rain on only four or five days a month. Winter days stay pleasant at 12–14 °C, while November is the wettest month, with showers on about 13 days.

The best months for Rome

April, May and October are ideal for long days among the ruins, with 19–23 °C — warm enough to enjoy the Roman Forum and the Palatine without the summer heat. In July and August, plan the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain for the early morning or evening, and spend the hottest hours indoors or in the shade of the Villa Borghese gardens. Winter is quiet and mild, ideal for museums.

Shelter from rain and heat

The Pantheon, with the open oculus in its dome, is a memorable place to watch a shower pass. Castel Sant’Angelo, the Capitoline Museums and the Galleria Borghese are good escapes from both the rain and the midday sun.
