Vogalonga Regatta, Venice, Italy

Venice’s non-competitive rowing parade on Pentecost Sunday: thousands of boats row 30 km through the lagoon past Burano and Murano and back along the Grand Canal.

Vogalonga Regatta, Venice, Italy

The Vogalonga is a non-competitive rowing event held every year in Venice, Italy, celebrating traditional rowing culture and the protection of the city’s lagoon. It was first held in 1975, when Venetian rowers set out to protest against motorboats and the wave damage they cause to the historic city. Any human-powered boat can take part, from gondolas and other Venetian craft to kayaks, canoes and dragon boats, and the event attracts thousands of participants from Italy and abroad; 2026 saw its 50th edition.

The regatta is not a race; there are no winners or prizes. Instead, it is a celebration of physical effort, teamwork, and cultural tradition. Participants paddle a long, scenic course through Venice and the surrounding islands, accompanied by cheering crowds along the canals.

When and Where It Takes Place

The Vogalonga is held every year on Pentecost Sunday, so the date falls between mid-May and mid-June; in 2027 it takes place on 16 May. The boats set off at 9 a.m. from St. Mark’s Basin.

The event takes place entirely within Venice and its lagoon, following a set route that highlights some of the most iconic waterways and island communities.

The route covers approximately 30 kilometers, beginning and ending in the heart of Venice:

  • Start at St. Mark’s Basin (Bacino San Marco)
  • Past the islands of Vignole and Sant’Erasmo in the northern lagoon
  • Burano, known for colorful houses and lace traditions
  • Mazzorbo, a quieter, vineyard-lined island
  • Murano, famous for glassmaking
  • Return through the Cannaregio Canal

The final stretch follows the Grand Canal under the Rialto Bridge to the finish at Punta della Dogana, opposite St. Mark’s Basin. Every participant who completes the course receives a commemorative medal and a certificate.

Taking Part and Watching

Rowers must register in advance on the official website; in 2026 the fee was €30 per person on board, and places ran out well before the event. Watching is free: good spots are the Riva degli Schiavoni at the start, the banks of the Cannaregio Canal and the bridges over the Grand Canal. Water buses usually stop running from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day.
