Dracula’s Castle (Bran Castle) is one of Romania’s most visited attractions. It owes this fame to Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula: the castle on its rock looks much like the count’s fortress in the book, although Stoker never visited Romania, and there is no evidence that Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century Wallachian prince linked to the Dracula legend, ever lived here.

The castle stands in the village of Bran, about 30 km south-west of Brașov, on a rock at the entrance to the Bran Pass, the old road across the Carpathians between Transylvania and Wallachia. The drive from Brașov takes about 35–40 minutes on the DN73. Buses leave from Bus Station 2 in Brașov every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly at weekends; the trip takes about 50 minutes and costs around 13 lei.

History

In 1377, King Louis I of Hungary allowed the Saxons of Brașov to build a stone fortress here to guard the pass and collect customs on the trade route; it was completed in 1388. For centuries it served as a border fortress and customs post, held by the Hungarian kings and later by the city of Brașov. In 1920 the city gave the castle to Queen Marie of Romania, who turned it into a royal summer residence.

After the Communist takeover in 1948, the royal family lost the castle, which became a museum. In 2006 it was returned to Queen Marie’s grandson, Archduke Dominic of Habsburg, and his family, who run it today as a museum of the castle’s history and royal furnishings, with exhibitions on the Dracula legend.

Visiting Bran Castle

Arrive early, ideally when the castle opens, to avoid long queues, especially in summer and during the Halloween season at the end of October. Tickets can also be bought online and scanned at the turnstiles.

Ticket prices (2026):

  • Adults: 100 lei (about €20)
  • Seniors 65+: 70 lei; students: 60 lei; children aged 5–17: 40 lei
  • Children under 5: free
  • The Time Tunnel and the Torture Rooms cost 30 lei extra each; combined tickets with fast-track entry are also available

Outside the ticket office is a small square with a market selling Romanian souvenirs and a café. Inside the castle grounds, visitors find a park, artificial pond, and panoramic views of the castle perched on the cliff.

The castle itself is notable for its narrow corridors, winding staircases and interconnected rooms. Legend speaks of secret passages below it; in fact, the old well in the courtyard was turned into a lift shaft in the 1930s, and a tunnel through the rock let Queen Marie reach the park below. Today this passage houses the Time Tunnel exhibition. While the exterior and courtyard are impressive, the interior museum is modest; those seeking richer interiors are better served by Peleș Castle in Sinaia, the former royal residence.
