Bratislava Castle (Bratislavský hrad) is the main landmark of Bratislava, standing proudly on top of a steep hill on the left bank of the Danube. Overlooking the historic center, the castle dominates the city’s skyline and is visible from both sides of the river.
History
- Prehistory — The hill has been settled since the Stone Age. In the 1st century BC it was the site of a Celtic oppidum, and later, during the Roman Empire, it was part of the frontier defences.
- 10th century — A stone castle was built on the hill as a border fortress of the Kingdom of Hungary.
- 15th century — King Sigismund of Luxembourg rebuilt the castle as a Gothic fortress.
- 16th–17th centuries — While Buda was under Ottoman rule, Bratislava (Pressburg) served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536. The castle was rebuilt as a Renaissance and later Baroque residence with a rectangular layout and four corner towers, and it housed the Hungarian crown jewels; the kings themselves were crowned in nearby St. Martin’s Cathedral.
- 18th century — The castle was expanded, including the construction of the Teresianum palace.
- 1811 — A devastating fire destroyed the complex, leaving it in ruins for over 140 years.
- 1953–1968 — The castle was rebuilt in its late 18th-century form. The fortifications, however, remain much older.
Today
Bratislava Castle houses the National Museum of Slovakia, with collections of historical artifacts, coins, and Slovak heritage. While the museum itself is modest compared to Vienna’s grand institutions, the castle’s architecture and panoramic views are the main draw for visitors.
