The Caravanserai in Kusadasi (Öküz Mehmet Paşa Kervansarayı) is a historic fortress-like inn built in 1618 by the Ottoman Grand Vizier Öküz Mehmed Pasha. Its main purpose was to protect merchants and their goods from robbers, as Kusadasi was an important Aegean port at that time.
Key facts about the Caravanserai:
- Constructed as a rectangle (43 × 51 meters) with high walls, loopholes, and sharp battlements.
- Features a central courtyard (21 × 28 meters) with a fountain and greenery.
- Two entrances – one from the sea and one from Barbarossa Boulevard pedestrian zone.
The structure has two floors: the upper floor accommodated merchants, while the ground floor was used for livestock and goods. The courtyard provided shade and a cool resting area during the hot season. Over the centuries, the Caravanserai fell into disrepair; restoration began in 1964, after which it operated for decades as a hotel and restaurant, and it was restored again in 1993.
Why visit the Caravanserai today:
