Güvercinada – Pigeon Island Fortress of Kusadasi

Pigeon Island in Kusadasi is best known for the Güvercinada Fortress (Güvercinada Kalesi), a historical Genoese-Ottoman castle and one of the main attractions of this Turkish resort.

Quick facts about Pigeon Island:

• Originally a true island, it is now a peninsula connected to the mainland by a 350-meter embankment.
• The fortress is open daily until late in the evening, and entrance is free.
• It is a short walk along the Kusadasi seafront from the town center and the cruise port.

Historically, the first fortifications on the island were built by the Genoese, who arrived in Kusadasi at the beginning of the 14th century. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Turks took control, and the island became known as Güvercinada. The present fortress dates from the 16th century: its inner castle is attributed to the famous admiral Barbarossa (Hayreddin Pasha, c. 1478–1546), and its walls to Ilyas Agha. The fortress protected the harbor against attacks from the sea, and today it is on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites.

Highlights for visitors today:

• The island is now a well-kept park with benches, walking paths, aviaries for pigeons, and shaded areas.
• Viewing platforms offer excellent panoramas of Kusadasi and the Aegean Sea.
• When we visited, the central tower housed a whale skeleton.

Walking around the entire fortress takes about 20–30 minutes. The area is slightly hilly, with historical signs and information in Turkish and English. At night, the fortress is beautifully illuminated, making it a picturesque spot for both day and evening visits.
