Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, Bulgaria

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is located near the town of Kazanlak, in the Valley of the Roses, about 200 km east of Sofia. The tomb dates back to the late 4th to early 3rd century BCE and is part of a large Thracian necropolis. It was discovered in 1944 and is one of the most important archaeological monuments related to the ancient Thracian civilization. Due to its exceptional artistic value, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

The tomb is famous for its well-preserved frescoes, which are considered among the finest examples of Hellenistic art in the Balkans. These paintings decorate the narrow corridor and the circular burial chamber, depicting scenes of a funeral banquet, horsemen, and ritual activities. The figures are notable for their realism, movement, and detailed expressions, providing valuable insight into Thracian beliefs, customs, and social hierarchy.

Visiting the Tomb

The original tomb is a small underground structure consisting of an entrance passage (dromos) and a domed burial chamber. Due to conservation concerns, access to the original interior is limited, and visitors typically enter a full-scale replica located nearby, which accurately reproduces the frescoes and structure. This allows visitors to experience the artwork while preserving the original monument.

The site is easily accessible from Kazanlak, located about 5 minutes by car or a short walk from the town center. Travelers can reach Kazanlak by car or bus from Sofia in approximately 3 hours, or from Plovdiv in about 1.5–2 hours. The area is well known for its rose production and scenic landscapes, making it a popular destination for cultural tourism.

The replica is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00 (17:30 in summer), and an adult ticket costs about €3 (6 leva before Bulgaria adopted the euro); pupils and students pay about €1 and children under 7 enter free.
