Rila Monastery, Bulgaria

Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is located in the Rila Mountains, about 120 km south of Sofia, surrounded by forested slopes and mountain scenery. Founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan of Rila, the monastery is a major spiritual, cultural, and historical symbol of Bulgaria and is still an active religious center today. Rila Monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, recognized for its outstanding cultural value and its role in preserving Bulgarian identity during centuries of foreign rule.

What is interesting to see
The monastery is best known for its striking architecture, with arcaded galleries, striped arches, and a fortified outer appearance. Inside and around the main church, built in 1834–1837, visitors can see richly painted frescoes covering almost every surface, created by Bulgarian masters such as Zahari Zograf. The monastery complex also includes a historic library, museum spaces, the medieval Hrelyo Tower from 1335, and peaceful inner courtyards. The mountain setting adds to the atmosphere and makes the visit especially memorable.

Entrance tickets.
Entry to the monastery courtyard and main church is free of charge. The Church History Museum, with icons, manuscripts and the famous carved Rafail’s Cross, costs €5 for adults and €2 for pupils, the Icon Gallery costs €2.50, and a combined ticket for all the monastery’s exhibitions costs €12; tickets are sold only at the monastery. The museums are open daily from 8:30 to 16:30, and until 19:30 from June to September. Visitors should dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered.

How to get there
Rila Monastery is most easily reached from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The direct public bus from Sofia’s Ovcha Kupel bus station has not been running recently, so check the current schedule before you travel. Otherwise, take a bus from Sofia to Dupnitsa or the town of Rila and continue by local bus or taxi; the last stretch takes 30–60 minutes. Shuttle minibuses and organized day tours from Sofia are the most convenient options, especially for visitors with limited time.
