The Ivan Vazov National Theater in Sofia is the leading drama theater in Bulgaria and the country’s oldest national stage. It was named after the Bulgarian writer and playwright Ivan Vazov.
The theater was founded in 1904, and the building itself opened in 1907. It was designed by the Austrian architectural bureau Fellner & Helmer. The building has been damaged by fires and rebuilt several times, but it has largely preserved its original form.
The theater is constructed in the Neoclassical style. Its façade features a portico with a colonnade, decorated with gilded bas-reliefs. The pediment displays a sculptural composition of the goddess Nike riding a chariot, accompanied by muses. Red brick dominates the exterior design.
The Ivan Vazov Theater is located in central Sofia, on a green square near the former royal palace and the Grand Hotel Sofia. Its official address is 5 Dyakon Ignatii Street, Sofia, Bulgaria.
The theater complex contains three halls: the main hall and two smaller ones, with a total capacity of around 1,000 seats. The repertoire includes productions by Bulgarian and international playwrights.
The building has also appeared in several films, including scenes from Hollywood productions such as Hitman and Transit. Today, the Ivan Vazov National Theater functions both as a cultural landmark and as Bulgaria’s principal venue for dramatic art.
