Celebrating the New Year in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is generally a quiet, home-centered affair. Unlike many large European cities, Sofia doesn’t have huge Christmas markets or mass street celebrations. During the holiday period, the city center becomes less crowded, although the decorations make it picturesque.
Where to Celebrate
If you want lively festivities, it’s better to head to Bulgarian ski resorts such as Bansko, Pamporovo, Vitosha, or Borovets, where tourist-oriented events and parties are common. In the city itself, life slows down during the holidays.
Weather
At the end of December and early January, Sofia is cool: nights are slightly below freezing, and daytime temperatures hover slightly above zero. Snowfall is possible, but some days are sunny.
Holiday Atmosphere
- A small Christmas fair can be found in the city park Gradska Gradina, opposite the Tsar’s Palace (now the National Art Gallery). The fair is cozy, with festive tents, food, souvenirs, a small stage, and a decorated Christmas tree.
- Vitosha Boulevard and the city center feature festive illuminations, making evening walks enjoyable.
- Traditional Bulgarian New Year customs include people in animal costumes with masks, ringing bells, and playfully interacting with passersby.
Shopping
Sofia’s shopping centers are elegantly decorated, with Christmas trees and lights. During this time, stores often offer real discounts up to 70%, making shopping a popular activity for locals and tourists alike.
