London weather through the seasons

London’s reputation for rain is bigger than the rain itself: the city has fewer wet days than Brussels or Amsterdam, typically 10–12 a month, and many of them bring only light drizzle. Summers are warm without being humid, peaking at about 23 °C in July, and the warmth of the big city keeps most winter nights above freezing at 2–4 °C.

Planning your visit

June to August is the warmest and liveliest time, with 21–23 °C and long evenings — the best season for Kew Gardens, the royal parks and the London Eye. May and September are almost as pleasant and less crowded. December brings 9 °C days, sunsets before 4 pm and festive lights along the West End streets.

Indoors when it pours

Carry a light waterproof all year: heavy downpours are rare, but showers can arrive without warning. Many of London’s greatest sights are indoors — Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral with its Whispering Gallery and the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London can easily fill a grey day.
