Königstein Fortress (Festung Königstein) is one of the largest and best-preserved hilltop fortresses in Europe, crowning a sheer-sided sandstone table mountain that rises some 240 metres above the River Elbe in the dramatic landscape of Saxon Switzerland, upstream of Dresden. Its natural rock walls made the site almost impregnable, and in more than 750 years as a stronghold it was never once taken by force. First recorded in 1233 as a rock “of the king,” it was turned into a mighty fortress from the 16th century by the Electors of Saxony, who used its safety to guard the state treasury, to imprison inconvenient nobles and, over the centuries, to shelter Dresden’s art treasures in times of war. Today its ring of ramparts encloses a whole hilltop town of some fifty historic buildings and commands one of the great panoramic views in eastern Germany.

A walk around the 1.8-kilometre circuit of ramparts is the highlight, opening up sweeping views over the loops of the Elbe, the neighbouring table mountains and the pinnacles of the Saxon Switzerland national park. Within the walls stand buildings spanning eight centuries, from the late-Gothic Georgenburg and the garrison church to Baroque barracks and pavilions; among them is the fortress’s deepest secret, a well sunk through the rock to more than 150 metres, one of the deepest in Europe, still demonstrated to visitors. The Magdalenenburg once held a legendary giant wine barrel, and the various casemates, batteries and store-rooms now house exhibitions on the fortress’s long history as treasury, state prison and refuge — its inmates famously including Johann Friedrich Böttger, the alchemist who stumbled upon the secret of European porcelain. In the 20th century the fortress served as a prisoner-of-war camp, a further chapter told in its museums.

Königstein lies in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains about 40 kilometres south-east of Dresden, close to the Czech border. The town of Königstein has a station on the scenic S-Bahn line (S1) along the Elbe from Dresden, and in the warmer months the paddle-steamers of the historic Saxon fleet also call here; from the town it is a steep climb, or a ride on the shuttle bus, up to the fortress gate. Drivers will find car parks just below the entrance. The fortress is open daily year-round and charges an entrance fee, with a panoramic lift and ramps making much of the plateau accessible despite the height. Allow at least half a day to walk the ramparts, visit the exhibitions and enjoy the views, and bring warm layers, as it can be windy and cool on top even in summer.
