The Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski) stands on Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) at the northern end of Warsaw’s Royal Route, marking the gateway to the Old Town. For centuries it served as the residence of Polish kings and the seat of the Sejm (parliament), making it one of the most important symbols of Polish statehood. Reduced to rubble by German forces after the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, the castle was painstakingly rebuilt from surviving fragments, archival drawings and Canaletto’s cityscapes, reopening in 1984. Together with the Old Town, it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The castle is renowned for its lavishly restored royal apartments and state rooms, including the Great Assembly Hall, the Throne Room, the Marble Room and the Senators’ Chamber. Its art collection features two authentic Rembrandt paintings and a celebrated series of views of 18th-century Warsaw by Bernardo Bellotto (known as Canaletto), which were used as references during reconstruction. Visitors can also explore the Lanckoroński Gallery and, in the adjacent grounds, the terraced Castle Gardens overlooking the Vistula River. Sigismund’s Column, Warsaw’s oldest secular monument, rises in the square just outside the entrance.

The castle is located at Plac Zamkowy 4, roughly a 10-minute walk from the Ratusz Arsenał metro station (line M1) or a short ride to the “Stare Miasto” stop served by buses 116, 178, 180 and 503. It is a pleasant 30–40 minute stroll from the central railway station through the Royal Route. The main historical route typically costs around 35–40 PLN for adults, with reduced tickets for students and seniors; children aged 7–16 pay a symbolic 1 PLN and those under 7 enter free. Admission is free on Wednesdays, though queues form early. The castle is generally closed on Mondays and open from 10:00 to around 17:00 (later in summer); confirm current prices and hours on the official website before visiting.
