Visby is the main town of Gotland, Sweden’s largest island, set in the Baltic Sea off the country’s south-eastern coast. As an island, Gotland can only be reached by sea or air. The most popular option is the ferry operated by Destination Gotland, which sails year-round from Nynäshamn (about 3 hours 15 minutes, just south of Stockholm and reachable by commuter train) and from Oskarshamn in Småland (around 3 hours). An overnight passenger ferry also runs directly from Stockholm, and there are frequent flights from Stockholm’s Arlanda and Bromma airports to Visby Airport, about 4 kilometres from town, taking only 40 to 50 minutes. The compact old town is best explored on foot, and bikes can be rented near the ferry terminal.

History and What Makes Visby Famous

Visby flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries as a powerful Hanseatic trading hub in the Baltic, and its decline in the late Middle Ages is precisely why so many of its medieval stone buildings have survived almost unchanged. Its defining feature is the Ringmuren, the 3.4-kilometre town wall built in the 13th century and studded with dozens of original towers, many of which still stand. Within the walls lie more than 200 medieval buildings, a remarkable collection of church ruins such as St Nicolai and St Karin, and the late-12th-century St Mary’s Cathedral, which is still in use. Visby was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995 as the best-preserved fortified commercial city in northern Europe, and it later served as visual inspiration for the town in the animated film Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Much of Visby’s appeal is free to enjoy: walking the city wall, exploring the open-roofed church ruins, and wandering the cobbled, rose-covered streets cost nothing, making it excellent value. The Gotland Museum, which tells the island’s long history including its Viking past, charges admission. The town is at its liveliest during Medieval Week (Medeltidsveckan) in early August, when thousands of people in period costume fill the streets for jousting tournaments, markets, and performances. From mid-May to mid-August vehicles are banned in the old town, adding to its peaceful atmosphere. Comfortable shoes are a must for the cobblestones, and accommodation books up quickly in summer.
