Maulbronn Monastery (Kloster Maulbronn) is the best-preserved medieval Cistercian monastery complex north of the Alps in Germany. Founded in the 12th century, it represents an outstanding example of monastic architecture and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Its architecture demonstrates the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style and reflects the disciplined simplicity characteristic of the Cistercian order. The monastery is also associated with the German writer Hermann Hesse, who attended the Protestant seminary housed in the former monastery buildings.
