Maulbronn Monastery, Germany

Maulbronn Monastery (Kloster Maulbronn) is the most complete and best-preserved medieval Cistercian monastery north of the Alps. Founded in 1147, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Its buildings show the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture and reflect the disciplined simplicity of the Cistercian order. After the Reformation the monastery became a Protestant seminary, which still exists today. The astronomer Johannes Kepler studied here, and so did the writer Hermann Hesse, who later drew on his time at Maulbronn in the novel Beneath the Wheel.
