Büdingen is one of the great surprises of Hesse: a small half-timbered town about 40 kilometres north-east of Frankfurt whose medieval defences have survived almost untouched. It is ringed by a complete circuit of walls raised between 1461 and 1511 under Count Ludwig II of Ysenburg, with some 22 sandstone towers and four gates, and is counted among the best-preserved fortified towns in Germany. At its heart stands Büdingen Castle, grown from a 12th-century moated stronghold into one of the finest surviving Hohenstaufen-era fortifications in the country and still the seat of the princely family of Ysenburg and Büdingen. Around it presses a compact old town of leaning timber-framed houses, quiet squares and cobbled lanes that sees far fewer visitors than the better-known towns of the Romantic Road.

The town’s emblem is the Jerusalem Gate (Jerusalemer Tor) of 1503, a striking double-towered gatehouse with ornate battlements, said to have been modelled on Herod’s Gate in Jerusalem in memory of its builder’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land. From here the ring of wall and towers can be traced around the old town, giving a vivid sense of how a late-medieval town defended itself. Büdingen Castle, entered from the Schlossplatz, is open for guided tours that take in a Romanesque chapel, the Staufer-era residential range and a rare late-medieval bath house, along with the family’s collections. Inside the walls, the Marktplatz and the lanes around it are lined with handsome half-timbered houses and the old town hall. Just beyond the Jerusalem Gate lies the Vorstadt, a planned suburb laid out after Count Ernst Casimir I issued his Edict of Tolerance in 1712, when religious refugees — the Inspired, Huguenots, Waldensians and Moravians — were invited to settle and brought their crafts and trades with them.

Büdingen lies in the Wetterau at the foot of the Vogelsberg hills, roughly 40 kilometres north-east of Frankfurt am Main and easily reached by car. The town also has its own railway station on the Lahn–Kinzig line, with regional trains via Gelnhausen and connections from Frankfurt, and it is only a short walk from the platform into the historic centre. The old town is compact and best explored on foot, with parking available outside the walls. Wandering the lanes and following the fortifications costs nothing; the castle opens for guided tours on set days from spring to autumn and the town museum keeps limited hours, so it is worth checking schedules before you travel. Büdingen is at its liveliest during its medieval festival and Christmas market, when the floodlit walls and gates make a memorable backdrop.
