Zlatni Rat, often called the “Golden Horn” or “Golden Cape”, is one of the most famous beaches in Croatia. It lies about 2 kilometres west of the harbour of Bol, on the southern coast of the island of Brač. What makes it unique is its shape: a narrow spit of fine pebbles reaching some 400–500 metres into the turquoise Adriatic. The tip shifts with the wind, waves and currents, so the beach looks slightly different from season to season.
Surrounded by crystal-clear water and an old pine forest, Zlatni Rat is a symbol of the Croatian Adriatic coast and one of the most photographed beaches in Europe.
Geography and Environment
The beach is made of small, smooth pebbles rather than sand, which keeps the water exceptionally clear. The two sides of the spit offer different conditions: the eastern side is usually calmer and good for families, while the western side catches the afternoon maestral wind and is popular with windsurfers.
The spit is protected as a geomorphological natural monument, and the pine forest behind it limits building, so the area keeps its natural look.
Climate and Water Temperature
Zlatni Rat enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. From June to September, daytime air temperatures are usually between 26 °C and 31 °C.
The sea in summer is around 24–27 °C, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Even in October the water usually stays at about 22 °C.
How to Get There
Most visitors come from Split. Car ferries sail from Split to Supetar, the main port of the island, in about 50 minutes; from Supetar it is about 40 minutes by car or a little longer by local bus to Bol. Catamarans run by Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka also link Split directly with Bol, and in summer a catamaran connects Bol with Dubrovnik. The small Brač airport is about 15 kilometres from Bol.
From Bol the beach is only 2 kilometres away along a seaside promenade shaded by pine trees. In summer a small tourist train and taxi boats also run between Bol and the beach.
If you travel by car, there is paid parking near the beach, though spaces fill up quickly during peak hours.
Tourist Information and Prices
Entrance to Zlatni Rat is free. You can bring your own towel or rent a set of two sun loungers and an umbrella for about €15–25 per day.
There are several bars, cafés and snack stands along the promenade where you can buy drinks, light meals and ice cream. Public toilets and showers are available for a small fee.
Water sports are very popular here, from windsurfing and paddleboarding to jet skis and banana boat rides. Equipment rental usually costs €10 to €50, depending on the activity.
Tips for Visitors
- Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially in July and August.
- Bring water shoes, as the beach is made of pebbles.
- The west side of the beach can be windy in the afternoon — great for water sports but less ideal for sunbathing.
- Shade is limited, so sunscreen and hats are essential.
- Stay in the nearby town of Bol if you want easy daily access to the beach.
