6 UNESCO Sites in Bavaria to Visit
map viewBavaria's UNESCO World Heritage Sites range from royal palaces to historic churches, and this page gathers six we have visited. In the Alpine south stand King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, listed in 2025 together with his other palaces. Nearby, the Wieskirche is a Rococo pilgrimage church standing alone in the meadows near Steingaden. In Franconia to the north, Bamberg's old town and its imperial cathedral form one World Heritage Site, and the Würzburg Residence, with Tiepolo's vast ceiling fresco above the staircase, is another. Tickets cost from €10 to €23.50, while the churches and Bamberg's old town are free. June to September is the best time to visit.

Bamberg old town, Bavaria, Germany
A UNESCO-listed old town spread across seven hills and an island in the Regnitz, famous for its Baroque palaces, its painted Old Town Hall standing midstream and the riverside fishermen's houses of Little Venice.

The Würzburg Residence is one of the finest Baroque palaces in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bamberg Cathedral, Bavaria, Germany
A four-towered imperial cathedral high on Bamberg's Cathedral Hill, home to the enigmatic medieval Bamberg Horseman, the Riemenschneider tomb of Emperor Henry II and the only papal grave north of the Alps.

Wieskirche / Pilgrimage Church of Wies, Steingaden, Germany
