Tower of David, Jerusalem

An ancient fortress that guarded the entrance to Jerusalem. Now it is the city's historical museum.

Tower of David, Jerusalem

The Tower of David Museum is located within the fortress commonly known as the Tower of David, a citadel built near the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem. The original structure dates back to the 2nd century BCE. The name “Tower of David” was given by the Byzantines, who believed that the palace of King David once stood at this site. During the Ottoman period, this designation became firmly associated with the citadel.

The northwestern section of Jerusalem was historically regarded as the city’s most vulnerable point. To reinforce it, King Herod constructed a large citadel, adding three towers that rose to heights of about 45 meters. The most prominent of these towers, Phasael, has survived and remains part of the present complex.

Over the centuries, the fortress was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. It served various functions, including as the residence of Crusaders and as a garrison for Ottoman troops. During the Ottoman period, a mosque was established within the citadel, and a minaret was added.

In 1989, the Tower of David Museum officially opened on the site, serving as Jerusalem’s historical museum. Today, it is one of the city’s most visited cultural institutions, receiving millions of visitors annually.

The museum complex contains several notable elements:

  • An archaeological courtyard with remains dating back more than 2,700 years.
  • A large-scale model of Jerusalem from the biblical period.
  • Exhibition rooms dedicated to the city’s history across different eras.
  • Access to the ramparts of the fortress wall, from which the Old City can be observed.
