Jerusalem weather in the Judean Hills
At about 750–800 metres in the Judean Hills, Jerusalem is drier than the coast and cooler at night. Summer is long and rainless: from June to September afternoons reach about 30–33 °C, but the dry air and evening breezes bring nights of 18–20 °C. Winter is cool and changeable, with 13–15 °C by day, around 6 °C at night and rain on about ten days a month in January and February; every few years the city even sees snow.
The best seasons for the Old City
March to May and October to November, with 18–28 °C, are the most comfortable months for walking the Old City, from the Jaffa Gate and the Tower of David to the Western Wall and the Jewish Quarter with the Hurva Synagogue. The ramparts walk along the city walls is best done in the morning, as in summer the stone lanes heat up quickly by midday.
Covered markets and holy sites
When it rains or the sun is fierce, the vaulted alleys of the Arab market and the Roman Cardo offer shelter, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre stays cool inside even in August. Access to the Temple Mount depends on opening hours and religious holidays, so check ahead and dress modestly.
