The Hurva Synagogue is located in the center of the Jewish Quarter, on Khurva Square. Visitors walking from Cardo Street to the Western Wall will typically pass by it. The original synagogue was built in the early 18th century and was destroyed twice, earning the name “Hurva,” meaning “ruins” in Hebrew. It was last destroyed during the battles for Jerusalem in 1948.
The modern synagogue, completed in 2010, is an exact reconstruction of the pre-1948 building. Designed in the New Byzantine style, it features a white dome with 12 windows, stained glass windows, and interiors that faithfully replicate the original frescoes and decorations. Before its destruction, the Hurva Synagogue was the main Ashkenazi synagogue in Jerusalem.
