The Church of São Francisco (Igreja de São Francisco) is one of the most surprising churches in Porto, in the north of Portugal. It stands near the Douro River, close to the Ribeira district. The church was built by Franciscan monks in the 14th and 15th centuries in the Gothic style, and from the outside it looks quite simple. But inside, almost every surface is covered with carved wood painted with gold. This rich decoration was added mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, in the Baroque style. Today the church is no longer used for regular services and is open to visitors as a monument and museum.
What to See
The golden interior is the highlight. Walls, columns, altars and ceilings are covered with carved and gilded wood showing angels, flowers, leaves and figures. One of the most famous works is the Tree of Jesse, a large carved altarpiece that shows the family tree of Jesus. Under the church are the catacombs, where monks and rich families were buried. Here you can see old tombs and an ossuary, a room where human bones are kept. Across the street, the visitor centre has a small museum with religious art and furniture.
How to Get There and Practical Information
The church is on Rua do Infante Dom Henrique, near the Ribeira waterfront and the Stock Exchange Palace (Palácio da Bolsa). It is easy to reach on foot from the centre of Porto. There is an entrance fee, which includes the church, the catacombs and the museum. Taking photos inside the church is usually not allowed. Allow about one hour for the visit. It is easy to combine with a walk along the Ribeira riverside.
