The Clérigos Tower (Torre dos Clérigos) is the most famous landmark of Porto, in the north of Portugal. It is the bell tower of the Clérigos Church, built in the 18th century in the Baroque style. Both the church and the tower were designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who lived and worked in Porto. The tower was finished in 1763. It is about 75 metres high, and when it was built it was the tallest building in Portugal. Because it can be seen from many parts of the city, it became the symbol of Porto.
What to See
The main attraction is the climb to the top of the tower. A narrow spiral staircase of about 240 steps leads to a viewing platform. From here there are wide views in every direction, over the red roofs of the old town, the cathedral, the Douro River and the bridges. The ticket also includes the Clérigos Church, with its rich Baroque altar and oval shape, and a small museum with religious art. In summer the tower is often open in the evening, when you can see the city lights from the top.
How to Get There and Practical Information
The tower is in the centre of Porto, a short walk from São Bento station and the Livraria Lello bookshop. There is an entrance fee, with lower prices for young people and free entry for small children. The staircase is narrow and steep, so the climb is not suitable for people who have problems walking or are afraid of small spaces. There can be queues in summer, so it is a good idea to go early or buy a ticket online.
