Festa de São João, Porto, Portugal

The Festa de São João takes place in Porto, Portugal, mainly in the historic centre and along the Douro River: in Ribeira, on Avenida dos Aliados, around Casa da Música and on the opposite bank in Vila Nova de Gaia. On the festival night the Porto Metro runs until morning with longer trains on all lines except the airport line, and STCP buses are reinforced. Many streets are closed to traffic, so walking is the best way to get around.

This festival is one of the oldest and most important traditions in Portugal, with roots in pagan midsummer celebrations later adapted to honour Saint John the Baptist. Today it attracts hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors each year. The best-known customs are tapping passers-by on the head with soft plastic hammers, releasing paper sky lanterns (allowed only during a set time window on the night), jumping over small bonfires, giving pots of basil, and eating grilled sardines with local wine in the streets.

The celebration is held every year on the night of 23–24 June. Concerts and street parties start in the evening, and at midnight a large fireworks display, about 12 minutes long in 2026, is launched over the Douro beside the Dom Luís I Bridge. Many people then walk along the river to the beaches of Foz to watch the sunrise. On 24 June, a public holiday in Porto, traditional rabelo boats race on the Douro. The next Festa de São João falls on the night of Wednesday 23 to Thursday 24 June 2027, with concerts and events over several days before and after.

Prices and Opening Hours

The Festa de São João is free to attend, as almost everything takes place in public streets and squares. Concerts, street entertainment and the fireworks can be enjoyed without charge.

Only private venues, river cruises and special dinners with a view of the fireworks require tickets, and they sell out early.

The party begins on the evening of 23 June and continues until sunrise on 24 June. The upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge is closed to pedestrians on the day, and the metro does not cross the bridge around midnight during the fireworks, so choose your river bank in advance.
