Frigiliana is one of the prettiest villages in Andalusia, in the south of Spain. It is a classic “white village”, with houses painted white and set on a hillside near the coast, in the province of Málaga. The village is well known for its old Moorish quarter, one of the best preserved in the region, with narrow winding streets, steps and small squares. Flowers, plants and colourful details decorate the white walls. From the village there are lovely views over the hills and down to the Mediterranean Sea.

What to See

The best thing to do in Frigiliana is simply to wander through the old streets. The Moorish quarter, with its steep cobbled lanes and whitewashed houses, is beautiful and full of small corners to discover. There are craft shops, small cafés and viewpoints along the way. Decorated tiles set into the walls tell the story of the village’s history. At the top of the village you can see the remains of an old castle and enjoy wide views. Frigiliana is also known for its local honey, wine and sweets, and it holds a popular festival of the three cultures each year.

How to Get There and Practical Information

Frigiliana is in the province of Málaga, close to the coastal town of Nerja and about an hour by road from Málaga city and its airport. The easiest way to visit is by car, and there are also local buses from Nerja. The village is small and its streets are steep and narrow, so it is explored on foot, with car parks at the edge of the village. It is free to walk around. It is a lovely place to visit at any time, but nicest in the softer light of the morning or the evening. Many people combine it with a visit to Nerja and its famous caves.
