Setenil de las Bodegas is a very unusual white village in Andalusia, in the south of Spain. It lies in the province of Cádiz, on a river gorge. What makes it special is that many of its houses are built into and under huge overhanging rocks. In some streets a great shelf of stone forms the roof over the houses and the road. The village is white, like other Andalusian villages, but the rock above the streets makes it look quite different from anywhere else. Its name comes from the wine cellars, or bodegas, that once used these cool rock spaces.

What to See

The most famous streets are Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, which run along the river beneath the overhanging rock. Here the houses are tucked right under the cliff, and bars and cafés spread their tables in the shade of the stone. It is a wonderful place to walk and take photos. Above the village you can climb to the old castle keep and a viewpoint that looks down over the white houses and the rocky gorge. The village is small, so it is easy to see in a couple of hours, and it is a favourite stop on tours of the white villages of Cádiz and Málaga.

How to Get There and Practical Information

Setenil de las Bodegas is in the north of the province of Cádiz, close to the town of Ronda, which is about 20 kilometres away. The easiest way to get there is by car, and it is often visited together with Ronda and other nearby white villages. The village is small and its streets are narrow, so cars are best left in the car parks at the edge and the centre explored on foot. It is free to walk around. The streets under the rock can be busy at lunchtime, so an early or late visit is quieter. Bring comfortable shoes for the slopes and steps.
