Marbella is one of the most famous seaside resorts in Spain. It lies on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Málaga, in Andalusia. The town has many beaches along its coast, with a total length of more than 20 kilometres. In the centre of Marbella the main beaches are Playa de la Venus and Playa de la Fontanilla, with golden sand and calm water. The Sierra Blanca mountains rise behind the town and protect it from cold winds, so the weather is sunny and mild for most of the year.
What to See
A long seaside promenade, the Paseo Marítimo, runs along the beaches. It is perfect for walking, running or cycling, and it has many cafés, restaurants and beach clubs (chiringuitos) where you can try fresh grilled sardines. The beaches have sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and water sports in summer. A few minutes from the beach is the old town of Marbella, with white houses, flowers and the pretty Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square). West of the centre is Puerto Banús, a famous marina with luxury yachts, shops and restaurants.
How to Get There and Practical Information
Marbella is about 45 to 60 minutes by car or bus from Málaga airport. There is no train station, but buses run often along the coast. The central beaches are within walking distance of the old town. The beaches are free, and sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented. In July and August the beaches are busy, but the long coastline means you can usually find space. The sea can be cooler than on the Mediterranean coast further east.
