Gothic Quarter of Barcelona

Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) is the historic center of Barcelona, Spain, known for its medieval streets, ancient Roman ruins, and Gothic architecture. The quarter preserves narrow stone-paved streets, stone houses from the 14th–15th centuries, and a dense network of squares and small alleys.

Location

The Gothic Quarter is situated in the heart of old Barcelona, bordered by Plaza Catalunya, La Rambla, and Via Laietana. It is easily accessible by foot from these landmarks. The nearest metro stations are Liceu and Jaume I.

History

Originally developed in the Middle Ages, the area was completely restored in the 1920s, preserving historic structures while adding museums, shops, restaurants, hotels, and cafes.

• Barcelona Cathedral – The main Gothic cathedral of the city, featuring intricate façades and a central cloister.
• Plaça del Pi – A square where three smaller squares meet, home to the Gothic Church of Santa Maria del Pi, known for its large rose window and octagonal bell tower.
• King’s Square (Plaça del Rei) – Contains the Palau Reial Major (14th century), including a throne room, chapel, and tower. The palace is famous for hosting Christopher Columbus upon his return from America in 1493. The square also houses the Museum of the History of Barcelona.
