Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi is a mountain in central Switzerland, located in the Alps near Lucerne. With a height of 1,797 meters, it is not among the highest peaks in the Alps, but it is well-known for its panoramic views and accessibility. The mountain is surrounded on three sides by lakes, including Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug, and its northwestern side features a steep cliff overlooking the Swiss Plateau. From the summit, the main range of the Swiss Alps, including the Bernese Alps, is visible.

Access

• The base of the mountain can be reached from Lucerne by boat (approximately 40 minutes) or by rail from other Swiss cities.
• Small towns at the foot of the mountain include Goldau and Vitznau. Goldau is accessible by train from Zurich (about 40 minutes), and Vitznau by boat from Lucerne.
• Two historic mountain railways serve the summit:
  • Vitznau–Rigi Bahn (opened 1871)
  • Arth–Rigi Bahn via Goldau (opened 1875)
• Cable cars are also available from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad; from there, the summit can be reached by the Vitznau–Rigi railway or on foot in about 1 hour 15 minutes.

A round-trip ticket for the mountain railway costs about 66 Swiss francs. Visitors can plan a circular route: ascent by train, walk toward Rigi Kaltbad, descend by cable car, and return by boat to Lucerne.

Activities and Attractions

• Panoramic views: The summit offers extensive views of the surrounding lakes, valleys, plains, and the Alps.
• Nature: Alpine meadows, snow at higher elevations in spring, and greenery near the lakes create a diverse landscape.
• Recreational activities: Winter sports (skiing and sledding, day pass ~47 francs), summer hiking and cycling on more than 100 km of trails, and the mineral bath and spa in Rigi Kaltbad.
• Steep cable car experience: The ascent from Weggis to Kaltbad provides dramatic views along the steep route.

Mount Rigi remains a popular destination year-round for both locals and tourists, offering a combination of scenic landscapes, outdoor activities, and historic mountain railways.
