Istiklal street, Istanbul

İstiklal Avenue (İstiklal Caddesi, “Independence Avenue”) is a major pedestrian street in the Beyoğlu district on the European side of Istanbul. It runs for about 1.4 kilometers from Tünel Square, near Galata Tower, to Taksim Square, and is one of the city’s most famous streets and a hub of cultural, commercial and social life. Until 1927 it was known as the Grande Rue de Péra. The only vehicle on it is the red nostalgic tram (line T2) between Tünel and Taksim. A leisurely walk from one end to the other takes about 20–30 minutes.

The street’s architecture blends European and Ottoman styles. In the 19th century the district of Pera was home to foreign merchants and diplomats, who built embassies, churches, shops and restaurants here. After the capital moved to Ankara, several of the grand embassy buildings, such as those of France, the Netherlands, Russia and Sweden, became consulates, and churches such as St. Anthony of Padua, the largest Catholic church in Istanbul, still stand on the avenue.

İstiklal Avenue is a lively area frequented by locals and tourists alike. It features a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cafés, street food vendors and nightclubs, as well as landmarks such as the Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage) and Galatasaray High School. The street is generally safe, with regular police patrols, and stays busy late into the evening, although it is sometimes closed off during demonstrations. A visit is often combined with nearby Galata Tower or a ride on the Tünel funicular (1875), one of the oldest underground railways in the world.
