Istanbul weather on the Bosphorus

Istanbul sits between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, and its climate is milder and damper than many visitors expect. July and August reach about 29 °C, with humid nights around 21–22 °C. Winters are cool, grey and wet, with 9–11 °C by day and rain on 11–13 days a month from December to February; when cold air arrives from the north, the city can even see snow.

Spring tulips and autumn light

April–May and September–October, with 17–26 °C, are the best months for walking between Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace or along İstiklal Avenue to the Galata Tower. In April the parks bloom during the Tulip Festival, and a Bosphorus cruise is at its most pleasant in late spring and early autumn, when the breeze on the water is fresh but not cold.

Bazaars and palaces for rainy days

Istanbul is well prepared for wet weather. The covered Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar can fill hours, the Basilica Cistern stays cool and dry underground, and Dolmabahçe Palace and the treasury halls of Topkapı are good indoor choices. The city’s large shopping malls are another refuge on stormy days.
