The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı, meaning “Covered Market”) is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, located in the historic center of Istanbul, Turkey. It lies between the districts of Beyazıt and Sultanahmet, within walking distance of landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia and Istanbul University. With more than 90 million annual visitors, it is among the most frequented attractions in the city for both tourists and locals.
Layout and Structure
The bazaar covers an area of over 30,000 square meters and can be accessed through 18 gates, the most notable being the Nuruosmaniye and Beyazıt gates. Inside, the market resembles a small city with its network of covered streets, vaulted ceilings, and shops. In addition to thousands of stores, it contains restaurants, cafés, mosques, fountains, and even residential buildings. Domestic animals, particularly cats, are a common sight within the bazaar. Many of the streets retain their traditional names, such as those dedicated to coppersmiths, jewelers, or hookah makers.
Goods and Shopping
The Grand Bazaar is renowned for its variety of goods, including souvenirs, carpets, antiques, jewelry, textiles, leather products, ceramics, and spices. Bargaining is customary, as prices are often adjusted for the high number of tourists. While many visitors come specifically to shop, others explore the bazaar to experience its bustling atmosphere and labyrinthine layout.
History
Construction of the Grand Bazaar began in the mid-15th century, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Over time, it developed into a commercial and financial hub where banks, exchanges, and international trade were conducted. Slaves were also traded there during certain periods of Ottoman history. Today, its function is primarily commercial, serving as both a marketplace and a cultural attraction.
