The House of Scientists (Ukrainian: Будинок вчених) in Lviv is a neo-Baroque palace built in 1897–1898 by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer as the Noble Casino, a club of the Galician aristocracy. Since 1948 it has belonged to the city’s scientists and hosts lectures, concerts and balls. It is best known for its vestibule with a grand carved oak staircase designed by the Hungarian sculptor Sándor Járay, one of the most photographed interiors in Lviv and a favourite backdrop for wedding photos; it also appears in the 1978 Soviet film D’Artagnan and Three Musketeers.
The building stands at vul. Lystopadovoho Chynu 6, a few minutes’ walk from the old town, next to the main building of Lviv University and Ivan Franko Park. Visitors can see the vestibule and staircase for a small fee (around 50 UAH), usually on weekdays during office hours, and guided tours of the halls can be booked. Allow 15–30 minutes.
