St. Peter’s Square is the central open space of Vatican City, located directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. It is one of the most visited squares in the world and a must-see attraction for anyone traveling to Rome.

The square can be reached from Rome via the wide avenue Via della Conciliazione, which leads directly to the Vatican. Despite being a separate state, the Vatican has no border controls with Italy—entry to the square is completely free, and you can come here at any time of day.

What to See on the Square

• Entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica – located on the right-hand side of the square. To get inside, visitors must pass through a security checkpoint with metal detectors.
• The Papal Balcony – from here, the Pope addresses the crowds on special occasions, such as Easter and Christmas.
• The Vatican Post Office – situated on the left-hand side of the square. It is famous among tourists because you can send postcards with unique Vatican stamps, available only here.
• The Egyptian Obelisk – a 35-meter-tall monument dating back to Ancient Egypt, brought from Heliopolis to Rome and later placed in the center of the square.
• Twin Fountains – located on either side of the obelisk, they add symmetry and harmony to the square.
• Christmas Decorations – during the winter holidays, a giant Christmas tree and Nativity scene are installed, attracting thousands of visitors.

Architecture and Design

The square was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667. Its most striking feature is the elliptical colonnade, consisting of 284 Doric columns arranged in four rows. Above the colonnade stand 140 statues of saints, creating an awe-inspiring impression. The semicircular embrace of the colonnades was intended to symbolize the “open arms of the Church” welcoming believers.

The façade of St. Peter’s Basilica and its marble statues form the backdrop of the square, making it one of the most photographed places in the world.

The location of St. Peter’s Square is not accidental. In Ancient Rome, this site was home to Nero’s Circus and a large necropolis. Tradition holds that the Apostle Peter was executed here, and later a small basilica was built on the site of his martyrdom. The current St. Peter’s Basilica replaced the older structure, becoming one of the grandest churches in the world.
