Fête de la Transhumance is a traditional celebration dedicated to the seasonal movement of livestock from lowland winter pastures to high mountain grazing areas. This practice, known as transhumance, has shaped rural life in the Alps and Provence for centuries, and in 2023 it was added to UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The festival honors shepherds, mountain agriculture, and the deep connection between communities and the natural landscape.
Unlike commercial fairs or staged performances, Fête de la Transhumance is rooted in real agricultural life. It marks the beginning of the summer grazing season, when thousands of sheep and other animals are guided along historic routes toward alpine pastures. The event combines pastoral tradition, regional gastronomy, music, and village celebration, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into rural French culture.
Fête de la Transhumance in Castellane
One of the most atmospheric places to experience this celebration is the small Alpine town of Castellane, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence near the Verdon Gorge. The festival takes place every year on the second weekend of June, when the flocks begin their climb to the summer pastures. The 20th edition was held on 12–14 June 2026, and the next one is expected on 11–13 June 2027.
The highlight comes on Sunday at about 11:00, when the flock passes through the streets of the town and is blessed in front of the Sacré-Cœur church. Hundreds of sheep and goats move slowly through Castellane, guided by shepherds and sheepdogs. The sight and sound of bells echoing against the mountain backdrop create a powerful and unforgettable atmosphere. Visitors can stand along the narrow streets and watch as the herd passes only a few meters away, offering a rare and intimate experience of pastoral life.
The celebration extends beyond the procession itself. A craft and farmers’ market sells local cheeses, honey, cured meats, lavender products and regional wines, and there are demonstrations of sheep shearing, wool spinning and sheepdog training, as well as farm animals, carriage rides and wooden games for children. On Saturday, visitors can join a 4 km mini-transhumance alongside the sheep. Folk music and Provençal food stalls add to the festive mood, and the whole festival is free.
