Temple Sveta Nedelya (Saint Nedelya, Катедрален храм „Св. великомъченица Неделя“) is a cathedral of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, located in the center of Sofia on Sveta Nedelya Square. The square, together with the nearby Independence Square, forms part of the city’s central area. Vitosha Boulevard is within walking distance.
The cathedral is named after the Great Martyr Nedelya, a figure venerated in the Balkans. The first church on the site was a wooden structure built in the 10th century. A stone church was erected in 1863, but it was severely damaged in a 1925 terrorist attack that killed about 150 people. Reconstruction was completed in 1933, resulting in the cathedral’s present appearance.
The dome of the cathedral reaches a height of 31 meters, which is smaller than that of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, yet the building retains its status as a cathedral. It was designed in the neo-Byzantine style. The interior features frescoes and paintings completed in the 1970s. Lighting inside is subdued, consistent with Orthodox church traditions.
Entrance to the cathedral is free. Services are regularly held, as the building remains an active place of worship.
Additional Information
The cathedral also functions as a historical site, illustrating Sofia’s religious and cultural evolution. Visitors can observe both its architectural features and memorials related to the 1925 attack, providing insight into the city’s social and political history.
