Budapest transforms beautifully as Christmas and New Year approach. The city is decorated with garlands, festive illuminations, and Christmas markets open across the streets. Hungarians celebrate these holidays with great enthusiasm, and the festivities are just as impressive as those in Vienna or Rome. So, is it worth visiting Budapest for New Year’s? Absolutely, but there are a few details to consider.
Trip Planning
- Accommodation: It’s best to book hotels in advance. Double rooms in central Budapest usually cost around €80–120 per night, and prices rise considerably over New Year’s Eve.
- Flights: Book early for the best rates. Budapest is the main base of Wizz Air, making low-cost flights easier to find.
- Weather: New Year’s in Budapest is cold, usually around 0°C, with daytime highs of +2 to +5°C and nighttime lows slightly below zero. Snow is rare.
- Currency: Hungary uses the forint (HUF); cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at most market stalls.
New Year’s Fairs
The center of the festivities is in Pest, where the largest Christmas and New Year markets are held.
- Vörösmarty Square and the square in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica host the main fairs, about 10–15 minutes apart on foot.
- Street food: Fried sausages, roast goose, chimney cake (kürtőskalács), and mulled wine are popular. A meal costs around €12–20 per person, and a mug of mulled wine about €4–6.
- Entertainment: In front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, there’s a small skating rink and an evening light show projected onto the facade of the basilica.
Fireworks
Budapest has no large official fireworks display on New Year’s Eve (the city’s big fireworks show takes place on 20 August), but at midnight countless private fireworks light up the sky. The embankments and the bridges over the Danube offer the best views. Many locals enjoy champagne during the celebrations, and tourists can easily join in.
January 1 in Budapest
- Many shops and attractions are closed, especially in the morning.
- Recommended activities: Városliget Park with its ice rink, Vajdahunyad Castle, and Széchenyi Baths, which are open every day of the year (book baths in advance to avoid crowds).
Christmas in Budapest
Visiting Budapest for Christmas (December 24–26) is not ideal, as it is primarily a family holiday and most establishments are closed. A better time to visit is December 27–30, when Christmas markets are still open, and the city is lively.
Budapest during New Year is magical, with festive markets, lights, fireworks, and a unique atmosphere perfect for both tourists and locals.
