Castel dell’Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples, in the south of Italy. It stands on the small island of Megaride, joined to the land by a short stone bridge, at the end of the city’s seaside promenade. The ancient Greeks first settled on this island, and later a rich Roman built a villa here. The castle we see today was built and rebuilt many times from the 12th century. Its name means “Egg Castle”. According to a legend, the Roman poet Virgil hid a magic egg in its walls, and if the egg breaks, disaster will come to Naples.
What to See
You can walk up inside the castle to its terraces, which give beautiful views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and the city. Next to the castle is the Borgo Marinari, a small harbour with fishing boats, yachts and seafood restaurants. The seaside promenade, called the Lungomare, runs from the castle along Via Partenope and Via Caracciolo. It is closed to cars and is very popular for walks, especially at sunset. Along the way there are cafés, small beaches and rocks where local people swim in summer.
How to Get There and Practical Information
The castle is on the seafront of Naples, about 10 minutes on foot from Piazza del Plebiscito. Several buses run along the waterfront. Entry to the castle courtyard and terraces is usually free. Parts of the castle are sometimes closed for events or restoration, so check before you go. The promenade is free and open at all times. It is especially beautiful in the evening, when the lights of the bay and Vesuvius are lit by the setting sun.
