Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. It consists of a circular arrangement of massive standing stones, set within a larger ceremonial landscape. Stonehenge was built in several stages between roughly 3000 and 1500 BC and is located in southern England. Its purpose is still partly unknown, but it is widely associated with ritual, astronomy, and ancient beliefs. Today, Stonehenge is one of the most visited historical sites in the United Kingdom, and since 1986 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites”.
Location
Stonehenge is located on Salisbury Plain, in the county of Wiltshire, southern England. It lies about 13 km north of Salisbury, around 140 km southwest of London. The monument stands in open countryside, surrounded by rolling grassland and other prehistoric remains. The nearest train station is Salisbury, which has direct rail connections from London Waterloo (travel time about 1.5 hours). From Salisbury station, the Stonehenge Tour bus runs to the visitor centre. Stonehenge is also easily reached by car via the A303 road; the car park at the visitor centre is charged for non-members.
Why it is famous
Stonehenge is famous for the size and weight of its stones. The largest sarsen stones weigh about 25 tonnes and came from West Woods near Marlborough, about 25 km to the north, while the smaller “bluestones” were brought from the Preseli Hills in west Wales, more than 200 km away. In 2024, scientists showed that the Altar Stone at the centre came from north-east Scotland. The monument is aligned with the movements of the sun: the most famous alignment is with the summer solstice sunrise and the winter solstice sunset, suggesting that Stonehenge played an important role in seasonal or ceremonial events.
